单词 | carouse |
例句 | carouse verb •it was pretty stupid to carouse the night before an exam:drink and make merry, go on a drinking bout, go on a spree | revel, celebrate, roister | informal party, booze, go boozing, binge, go on a binge, go on a bender, paint the town red, rave, whoop it up | archaic wassail.WORD NOTE mallemaroking I rejoice in a language which includes so highly specific a term as this— the carousing, it signifies, of drunken seamen on icebound Greenland whaling ships. The etymology is unconvincing, and there is some danger that the word may seem a nonce-word, created as a joke to describe a situation so infrequently encountered as not to require a word to denote it. Yet it has enjoyed some publicity in recent years, not least when an editor at The Guardian in London noticed that in a later edition of the first dictionary to include it, the definition of mallemaroking had been slightly changed to the carousing of drunken seamen in icebound whaling ships—dropping the word Greenland, which had hitherto so circumscribed the activity. The same editor wrote a mock-fulmination on a Saturday editorial page: the foul practice of mallemaroking, he fumed, previously confined to the Greenland of its birth, seems now to have detached itself from its origins and is fast spreading across the world. It must be stopped immediately, before it is too late. Ever since, the word has enjoyed some small currency, which I would like to see expanded to a subtle degree. The practice being so rare, it is difficult to imagine many writers being able to employ it as a consequence of observation: rather it might be used in sentences such as •I sat in silence on the floe, fancying as I did so that above all the creaking of the bergs and the moaning of the wind, I could hear the faint echo of mallemaroking from the vessels fixed fast out in the Strait. — SWConversational, opinionated, and idiomatic, these Word Notes are an opportunity to see a working writer's perspective on a particular word or usage. |
