cupola noun See dome. USAGE cupola, copula Cupola = an arched or domed roof, as on an astronomical observatory. Copula = (1) a linking verb, such as be, feel, or seem, that expresses a state of being rather than action; or (2) a link or connection in general—e.g.: “This is the age of parsing, a word that once referred to the grammatical analysis of sentences. Now it means playing games with words, as Bill Clinton did with the copula ‘is’ in worming his way out of charges of illicit copulation.” ( San Francisco Chronicle; Aug. 31, 2001.) Copula wrongly displaces cupola fairly often, probably by writers not versed in architecture—e.g.: “Each has its own copula [read cupola ], Boston Gables, as well as numerous peaks with windows galore, all topped by a metal roof.” (Times-Picayune [New Orleans]; Sept. 30, 2001.).Usage notes show additional guidance on finer points of English usage. |
