I could hear voices coming from the apartment above. ➔ Above is also used in a piece of writing when referring to something that comes before: The graph above shows the increase in pollution levels.
► over preposition, adverb above something without touching it: A small lamp hung over the desk. Everyone looked up when the helicopter flew over.
► overhead adverb above your head: The big birds were flying in circles overhead.
