► jam a situation in which something is stuck in a machine and is preventing things from moving through it: I think there is a jam in the photocopier. ➔ You also use jam or traffic jam when a line of vehicles cannot move along the road or can only move very slowly, because there are too many cars or something is blocking the road: We arrived late because of a traffic jam.
► blockage something that stops things from moving through a pipe or tube: The water won't go down the sink - there must be a blockage in the pipe.
► obstruction something that blocks something such as a tube, path, or road. Obstruction is more formal than blockage: She had an operation to remove an obstruction from her throat. The fallen tree jas caused an obstruction in the road.
► hold-up (informal) something that stops you from being able to continue doing something or going somewhere, especially when this only lasts a short time: The work being done on the freeway is causing major traffic hold-ups. The materials didn't come on time but, despite the hold-up, we finished the work by the deadline.
