to say that someone can do something, or say that something can happen:

    allow
    allow means the same as let but is slightly more formal. You usually use allow about what a parent, teacher, or someone in authority lets someone do because of the rules they have made:
  • The school does not allow students to use cell phones in class.
  • I'm allowed to stay up later on weekends, but on school nights I have to be in bed by ten.
  • GRAMMAR: Don't say: The teacher didn't allow to talk or The teacher didn't allow to us to talk. Say: The teacher didn't allow us to talk.
    permit (formal)
    permit means the same as let. Permit is used especially in official or legal language about rules that allow people to do things:
  • The company permits people to smoke outside, but not inside the building.
  • Students are only permitted to use their phones at lunch and after school.
  • give someone permission
    to allow someone to do something. You use give someone permission when a parent, teacher, or someone in an official position decides to allow you to do something:
  • The school gave him permission to leave early for a doctor's appointment.
  • give your consent (formal)
    give consent means the same as give permission but sounds very formal:
  • Pascual gave his consent, saying that Benito could marry his daughter.
  • authorize (formal)
    to officially or legally say that someone can do something:
  • The UN authorized a peacekeeping mission in the country.
  • sanction (formal)
    to officially allow something or approve of doing it. You usually use sanction when the government or a large organization allows something, especially when some people think it is wrong:
  • In some states, the law sanctions the use of marijuana for medical reasons.
  • condone (formal)
    to accept or allow behavior that most people think is wrong:
  • I do not think our country should condone torture, even in a war.
