a set of things or places that is written down. People usually write lists with one thing written underneath another:

    a list that shows the main ideas of a long piece of writing, but that does not show the details. An outline is a way of showing how a piece of writing is organized, and you use numbers and letters for each of the parts:
  • Before you write your history report, plan the report using an outline that shows the different sections.
  • table
    a set of numbers or other information, arranged in rows on a page:

  • As the teacher called the roll, each student said “here” or “present.”
  • roster
    a list of the names of people who are expected to take part in a class, activity, or sports event:
  • The regular pitcher is injured, so Manuel is on the roster for tomorrow’s baseball game.
  • directory
    a list of the names, telephone numbers, and addresses of people who are a part of an organization:
  • The directory lists companies that will take you rafting on the river.
  • register AWL
    an official list or record of something:
  • We ask everyone who comes to the funeral service to sign the register.
  • short list
    a list of the best people for a job or a prize, chosen from all the people who were possible:
  • I was on the short list with five other people, but I didn’t get the job.
  • 3 a list in a book table of contents
    the list at the beginning of a book that tells you the name of each part of the book:
  • I looked at the table of contents and saw that there were four short stories in the book.
  • glossary
    a list of words with an explanation of their meaning, usually printed at the end of a book in alphabetical order:
  • Some of the difficult words are in the glossary at the back of the book.
  • index AWL
    a list at the end of a book that tells you where each person or subject in the book is mentioned, by giving you the page numbers. In an index, the names and subjects are in alphabetical order:
  • Look under L in the index to see which pages talk about Abraham Lincoln.
  • bibliography
    a list of all the books and articles that someone used when he or she wrote something:
  • There is a short bibliography at the end of the article.
