► toward preposition used to say that someone or something is moving closer to someone or something: Wright noticed two policemen walking toward him. ➔ Toward is also used to say what someone or something faces or points at: All the windows face toward the sea.
► to preposition used to say where someone goes. You use to to mention the place where someone will be after he or she has finished moving: He has gone to Australia. She stood up and walked to the door. ➔ Don’t say: We’re going to home. Say: We’re going home.
► in the direction of also in someone’s direction preposition toward the area where a place or person is. In the direction of is used, for example, when it is not clear if someone intends to get to the place or not: “Where’s Rick?” “I saw him walking in the direction of Harry’s house.” I tried to get the waitress’s attention but she wasn’t looking in my direction.
► up adverb if you go up to a person or building, you go nearer and then stop when you are near him, her, or it: An old man came up to me in the street and asked for money. He saw a police car drive up and park outside his house.
