► build to make a building, bridge, or another structure: Most of the houses in this neighborhood were built in the 1950s. We want to build a fence around the backyard.
► construct AWL to build something large such as a building, bridge, or road. Construct is more formal than build: There are plans to construct a new bridge across the river.
► put up to build something such as a building, wall, or fence. Put up sounds less formal than build: They're planning to tear down these apartments and put up an office building.
► assemble AWL to put the different parts of something together, such as a machine or piece of furniture: The bookcase is easy to assemble.
► erect (formal) to build a large important building or structure: The first lighthouse was erected on the island in 1912.
► pitch if you pitch a tent, you put it up so that it is ready to sleep in: Make sure you pitch your tent somewhere flat and without too many rocks underneath it.
