  • protagonist (formal)
    the most important character in a book, play, television show, or movie:
  • The protagonist is a young woman who wants to be a dancer.
  • antagonist (formal)
    the main opponent of the protagonist:
  • In the Harry Potter stories, Voldemort is the main antagonist.
  • You can also say that two characters who oppose each other are antagonists: Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner are antagonists in a cartoon, with the Coyote always trying to trap the Road Runner.
